Sr. Ceviche – Enhancing Barcelona’s Love for Latin American Cuisine

While spending my first-ever break in Barcelona, my small group of friends sat on the freshly cut green glass of the Parc de la Ciutadella. We were researching available restaurants in the area, most of which served traditional Spanish dishes such as paella. Minutes of research followed until we found a restaurant within walking distance of Barcelona’s Arc De Triomf, boasting fine Latin American cuisine.

Sr. Ceviche - A name I would never have linked with the city of Barcelona. It was confirmed to have received many positive reviews, which swayed us to try this Latin-American eatery. We all agreed to give this a go and introduce ourselves to Barcelona's Latin American cuisine scene.

A walk that takes no more than ten minutes from the Parc de la Ciutadella guided us to Sr Ceviche, located on the C/ de Trafalgar Camino (Spanish for road). Situated on a corner, it looked like a small restaurant that locals could easily walk past without noticing. Thanks to the power of our research, however, three more hungry diners will visit Sr. Ceviche to dine in authentic Latin American style.

We entered the restaurant and were warmly welcomed by the waiter, who guided us to our table through the small crowd of diners. After we seated ourselves, the menus were laid before us, confirming the tapas and ceviche items offered. We also had a cocktail menu that displayed the bog-standard cocktails that are the most traditional in Latin America.

As a mojito cocktail fanatic, I ordered this to start engaging with Barcelona’s Latin American dining experience. My two friends ordered cocktails to join me on this adventure. Our waiter then returned with our cocktails, including my traditional mojito, appearing in a glass resembling the exterior of a pineapple. We then placed our food order with our waiter before enjoying our cocktails further.

Aside from the strong presence of the rum base, the fizziness of the soda water provided satisfaction, along with the hint of lime and mint flavouring. Half of a lime was candied, and the glass was topped with a small sprig of mint for that touch of presentation. I continued to enjoy the strong yet delightful sips of my mojito when our food orders arrived at our table.

The ‘Bestseller’ Fish Tacos and White Fish Ceviche arrived at our table looking as if an explosion of dull colours had occurred on the two plates. The fish tacos were presented before me, separated by two wedges of lime, ready to be squeezed over them. Two flour tortillas acted as the base for the pile of white fish, grated cheese, lettuce, guacamole, and pico de gallo. Stripes of chipotle sauce topped both piles and contributed significantly to their heat.

The first bite of the first fish taco revealed how fresh everything was. The delicate white fish flaked away with every bite, and the freshness of the pico de gallo exploded profusely in my mouth. Thanks to the contributing chipotle sauce drizzled over the fish tacos, my palette tingled. Thanks to the tacos themselves, my mind immediately transported me to an outdoor restaurant in Latin America.

I could sense my two friends occasionally glancing at the tacos I ate. One of them, at the time, said they weren’t hungry. How they could say this while glancing at the fish tacos is beyond me. Nevertheless, I continued my satisfying journey through these tacos before moving on to my white fish ceviche.

It is safe to say that both my ceviche and the ceviche of one of my friends, who also ordered one, arrived in a vibrant explosion of bright and light colours. The only difference is that it was served in a dark grey-blue bowl rather than a blue plate. The colours are visibly displayed thanks to the chopped mango, red pepper, red onion, and coriander added to the dish’s final decoration.

Upon sampling this ceviche for the first time, I was blown away by the mango's instant sharpness. This was followed by the slight sweetness of the red onion and the crunch of the red pepper, which wasn’t too soft but wasn’t too hard either. The white fish fell away delicately in the bowl as I used my spoon to cut my way through the fish easily.

The flavour was enhanced once consumed thanks to the ceviche, armed with the lime-flavoured base's sharpness. However, the coconut milk in the ceviche reduced this sharpness dramatically while keeping the traditional flavour that comes with an authentic Latin American ceviche.

I continued to consume my ceviche pleasantly until nothing was left to slurp up in the bowl. My friends and I then settled the bill for my fish tacos, mine and my friend’s ceviche, and cocktails. We graciously thanked our waiter for Sr. Ceviche’s hospitality while contributing to the introduction to Barcelona’s Latin American food scene.
